Remains found at Mt Coot-tha 'may be more than a decade old'

The walking track has been closed while police investigate.

Human bones found at Mount Coot-tha in Brisbane's west this week appear to have been in the area for more than 10 years, Queensland police have said.

Bushwalkers discovered the remains in rocky bushland off a popular walking track near the JC Slaughter Falls car park about 11:15am on Wednesday.

Police said they were treating the discovery as non-suspicious and were continuing to go through missing persons registers for clues to identify the remains.

They said it could take some time before forensic experts could confirm more details.

Police said on Wednesday the group of walkers was surveying Mt Coot-tha for a potential zipline project and saw a set of shoes underneath the brush of the bush, about 650 metres off the Aboriginal art trail.

When they went over and pulled on the shoe, the walkers found the human remains, police said.

Officers said a backpack, shoes and other personal toiletry items were also found.

Police said one of the lines of investigation was that the area was known to be frequented by homeless people.

The popular track is one of 66 in an extensive network of trails in the Mt Coot-tha Forest, located five kilometres from Brisbane's CBD.
