Relive Shearer and Gascoigne's glory as ITV unearth Euro 96 this summer

England fans will get the opportunity to relieve the Three Lions’ journey to the semi-finals of Euro 1996 this summer, ITV have announced.

This summer was set to be dominated by the highly-anticipated European Championships - which were set to be staged across 12 different countries - until the widespread outbreak of the coronavirus forced the competition to be suspended for a further 12 months.

With a summer of international football now off of the agenda, football fans, starting in May, will get the chance to relieve all 31 matches of Euro 96, which was staged in England, courtesy of ITV, who have dived into their archives to dig out the matches.

Featuring England’s successes over Scotland and the Netherlands in the group stages, which, of course, included Paul Gascoigne’s famous goal against the Scots and Alan Shearer netting against Holland, ITV will show all of the goals and key moments that unfolded from that famous tournament 24 years ago.

Paul Mortimer, Head of Digital Channels & Acquisitions, ITV said: “Nothing brings the country together like Euro fever, and with this year’s tournament postponed to 2021, we’re giving our audience a chance to relive one of the all-time great sporting events, Euro ’96.

“Thanks to the ITV Hub and ITV4, there’ll be no shortage of vintage football classics for fans to indulge in over the next few months.”

The airing of the Euro ‘96 re-run will begin in May and will feature every single match from the tournament, including Germany’s 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in the final at Wembley.

That summer, England, of course, made it to the semi-final stage before losing on penalties to Germany, with now-England manager Gareth Southgate missing a penalty in the shoot-out, allowing the Germans to progress as 6-5 winners, after the game had ended 1-1 after 120 minutes.
