Relief as public toilet facilities across Perth and Kinross start to reopen

Public toilets in Perth and Kinross have started reopening - much to the relief of those looking to go further afield as lockdown is eased.

The facilities across the region had been closed as the nation battled the coronavirus pandemic.

But the council started the process of opening the toilets on Friday when residents in Pitlochry and Dunkeld were able to 'spend a penny'.

All public toilets across Perth and Kinross will be open by July 10.

The council is warning there will be a change in opening hours to allow for them to be deep cleaned

Opening hours, locations and facilities at each site can be found at www.pkc.gov.uk/publictoilets

A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council said: "Our main priority is to ensure facilities are safe for people to use and they will be closed for a short period of time each hour for inspection and to sanitise facilities and maintain a high level of cleanliness.

"These temporary closures for cleaning are unavoidable, and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience.

"There will be signs put up to remind users to wash their hands thoroughly to protect themselves and others. We will also have social distancing measures in place and that may mean users have to queue before entry.

"Please follow signage and adhere to instructions given by attendants.

"Each of our unattended facilities will be deep cleaned daily. As these facilities are not staffed, we are relying on those using them to act responsibly.

"We are confident that people will do so, allowing us to keep the facilities open, but we will check regularly and respond swiftly if any issues arise."

Many of the council's partner comfort schemes, which provide additional toilet facilities and are operated by local businesses, will also be reopening over the coming weeks, although it is recommended checking ahead as they to will have new measures and operating hours.

The spokesperson added: "Please remember whether you are using an attended, unattended or comfort scheme facility, it is important to practice social distancing and take sensible hygiene measures."
