Relief as Cork escapes flooding but washout hits in one other Irish county amid flurry of Met Eireann weather warnings

There was relief across Cork this morning as the city centre escaped widespread flooding by the skin of its teeth.

But there is flooding in Waterford this morning, as waters spill over onto the Gold Coast Road.

In Cork, fears were growing among traders and households that another washout could be on the way amid a status orange weather warning from Met Eireann this morning.

But the tide turned in the nick of time, in a major let-off to the city's businesses.

More than 100 council members hit the streets in the early hours of this morning in a desperate bid to stave off the waters – and their prayers were answered around 6.30am as the water retreated.

While Cork got off the hook, though, motorists are being urged to take care in Waterford as floods hit the Munster county just outside Dungarvan.

AA Roadwatch has urged drivers to be careful if they're passing the Gold Coast Road.

Elsewhere, 16 other counties were on high alert after a status yellow warning that predicted winds of up to 100 km/h.

The warnings are due to end this morning at 9am, and local authorities will be praying that there's no more bad news in store.

Met Eireann says outbreaks of rain will clear as the day goes on and give way to bright spells and blustery showers as Ireland continues to suffer weather-wise.

A spokesperson for the national forecaster said: "Some of the showers may merge to longer spells of rain in places during the late afternoon. Afternoon highs of 7 to 10 degrees in strong and gusty south to southwest winds."

Tonight, showers will continue to affect mainly western and northwestern areas, Met Eireann says, with lowest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees as dawn breaks.
