“Relentless” rain has battered parts of the UK as more than 40 flood warnings have been put in place.

Parts of England and Wales saw huge downpours on Tuesday night, with drivers facing treacherous conditions in South Wales.

According to the Met Office, a staggering 39.4ml worth of rain fell in Libanus, Powys, Wales after the region saw nine hours’ non-stop rain.

Police in South Wales also shared pictures of a car that had a “lucky escape” after it lost control on a wet road.

The force said: “Very lucky escape as it’s a long way down on the other side of the railing. The rain is with us for the night, so slow down”.

Images of dreary conditions were also being widely shared, as one person said: “Relentless rain as far as the eye can see”.

The Met Office warned flooding of homes and businesses is likely, as a Yellow weather warning was put in place.

A further 42 flood alerts were also put in place for most of the country as well.

Forecaster Grahame Madge said wet conditions are likely to ease off on Wednesday, though.

Mr Madge said: “The rain will start to peter out in the South East and will dry out. We’ve still got reasonably strong winds, but the rain will be more showery.”

He added that parts of northern England and wales will “quite wet”, but the South East could see some bright spells.
