'Relegated already!' - Middlesbrough fans react to Daniel Ayala reports amid Leeds United links

Middlesbrough fans have had plenty to say about Daniel Ayala's future on Teeside.

With his contract set to expire at the end of this month, the Spaniard is believed to have refused a short-term deal to play out the rest of the campaign.

Boro have nine games of the season remaining and the absence of the long-serving defender will be a real miss with the team two points above the drop zone.

Jonathan Woodgate's side have two fixtures on the agenda before Ayala's deal officially expires, but it has been reported that the player will not take part in either game.

Leeds United loss of matchday income

A number of players in the same boat as the 29-year-old have also done likewise ahead of the Championship restart as some have big-money moves on the table for the summer and cannot risk picking up an injury.

Leeds United have been one of the clubs linked with a move for Ayala ahead of next season as Marcelo Bielsa looks to strengthen his defence.

The news about the ex-Liverpool man's upcoming departure has not gone down well with Boro fans and many have had their say on Twitter.

With some commenting on a potential move to Elland Road for the 2020/21 campaign, a couple of fans feel that the club could actually be heading down to League One now that the player will not take part in any of their remaining fixtures.

Ayala actually hasn't played a competitive game since New Year's Day due to an ankle injury and his absence in their final nine games will be a big miss.

The player has recently returned to training but it now appears that it will be at the start of next season when he eventually takes to the pitch again.

Joining the club initially on loan from Norwich City, the centre-back has made 193 appearances for Boro in his time on Teeside.

Newcastle United have also been linked with a move for the defender as well as Leeds.
