Released 6ft 4in defender Ludwig Francillette finds new club after leaving Newcastle United

Released Newcastle United defender Ludwig Francillette has signed a two-year deal with EFL side Crawley Town.

The Magpies made the decision to let him go in the summer after two years at the club but the 6ft 4in centre-back and former Under-23 Toon captain has been signed because of his "potential" say Crawley.

Francillette, who also attracted interest from Portsmouth, could make his debut at Hartlepool this weekend.

Crawley manager John Yems said: "Ludwig has been around the place for a while now, he’s been training with us as well as at other clubs and scored against West Ham.

"It is great that we have been able to land Ludwig and I wish him all the best here at the club and I hope he can be a big part of our squad."

Chief Executive Erdem Konyar said: "We are delighted to have secured Ludwig on a long-term deal. We believe under the guidance of our gaffer, he has the potential to develop into an important player for the club."

Francillette was named in the first-team squad for Newcastle in 2020 for the FA Cup tie at Rochdale.

But Newcastle opted against handing him a debut despite his clear physical presence.
