Release of Peter Rabbit 2 delayed until August as coronavirus continues to spread

The release of Peter Rabbit 2 is set to be delayed by five months as the coronavirus outbreak has shuttered cinemas around the world.

The film, which features the voice of James Corden, was slated for release in the UK on March 27.

But with some countries on lockdown as a result of the virus, and a number of locations considering banning public gatherings, Sony Pictures has decided to hold off until August 7 for its release in the UK and globally, according to Hollywood Reporter.

Italy in lockdown over coronavirus

Italy in lockdown as coronavirus restrictions extended nationwide

Italy, which is the 10th biggest box office outside of North America, saw the government issue a decree last weekend which forced the closure of its cinemas for nearly one month.

A number of other countries have taken similar measures to prevent the virus' spread, including China, France and Kuwait.

The film is believed to be the second to be delayed as a result of the virus.

Just last week, it was announced that the latest James Bond film, No Time To Die, wouldn't hit the big screen until November 12 , more than six months after its planned release.

MGM did not specifically cite the virus as the reason for its decision, but said the move followed "careful consideration and thorough evaluation of the global theatrical marketplace".
