Release of Mason Foster leaves Redskins with $11.5 million in salary cap space

After the surprise release of veteran linebacker Mason Foster on Tuesday, the Washington Redskins may have opened up some salary-cap space in order to fill ulterior motives.

With the move, the Redskins saved $4 million against the cap, which leaves them with just over $11.5 million in cap space ahead of the 2019 season, according to Over The Cap. Washington currently has 89 players on the roster ahead of camp, which is just one shy of the max.

The newly freed up money after Foster’s release could mean something else is in the works. One idea points to the offensive line, where the Redskins could use more bodies in the wake of Trent Williams’ likely holdout — or it could mean they need the guaranteed money for a Williams extension.

There is nothing to say that the Redskins won’t hold on to some of their cap space for the regular season, as they will need some pocket change to spend in case one of their players goes down with an injury, which is a sight that is all-too-familiar in Washington.
