Release denied for man who took police on wild chase through Lake Co.

Nov. 26--Chicago Tribune Media Group's Lake County News-Sun reports: The Ingleside teen who led police on a wild chase through Lake County Nov. 13 was denied conditional release in bond court Tuesday.

Ronald Maas, 18, who was shot by police during the chase, appeared in court in a wheelchair with a cast on his arm and stitches on his face. He had just been released from the hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound that left his jaw wired shut with several teeth missing and a hole in his throat and trachea.

Judge Joseph Savi set bond at $2 million for Maas, who is facing 10 criminal charges, including attempted murder involving a police officer.

Assistant State's Attorney Lauren Walker detailed the wild chase Maas allegedly led police on the night of Nov. 13 and early morning of Nov. 14. As he wound through several Lake County towns at high speeds, Walker said Maas stole two cars, caused several crashes that injured multiple people, some seriously, and nearly struck a police officer with a vehicle.

According to the 15-year-old female passenger who was with Maas, the defendant had been "smoking crack" that afternoon, was drinking stolen liquor that evening and vowed not to "go back to jail," Walker said.

After his eventual arrest in Third Lake, his blood-alcohol content registered .139, and he tested positive for marijuana, cocaine and opiates, Walker said.
