Former Dundee United star's relative murdered in Johnstone street brawl

A young dad has been murdered in a street brawl.

Johnny Winters, 26, who is related to former Scotland, Aberdeen and Dundee United striker Robbie Winters, died in Johnstone, Renfrewshire.

A 17-year-old male, who can’t be named for legal reasons, was detained in connection with the death and is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court today.

Emergency services raced to the scene, which is just yards from Johnny’s home in Johnstone’s High Street at about 8.30pm on Wednesday.

It is understood that paramedics tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Yesterday, a stretch of the street remained sealed off as forensic officers combed the area, a guard stood watch and other officers carried out door-to-door inquiries.

Johnny’s heartbroken family took to Facebook to pay their respects to the dad, who is believed to have a young child.

His sister Lisa-Marie Winters wrote: “Can’t believe I’m writing this but my wee brother Johnny passed away.

“Love you so much Johnny bhoy and always will.

“Absolutely heartbroken, still can’t believe it.”

His partner, Natasha Cameron, added: “Love you always Johnny Winters.

“I’ll do you proud for our baby. Fly high, my boy. Love you always. RIP GBNF.

“This is a hard time for me and his dad. We loved this boy to infinity. Words can’t explain what we feel right now.”

Johnny, who was previously spared jail after arming himself with two swords in the street, died weeks after he was released on bail over two separate court cases.

He was allegedly caught in possession of drugs, while armed with a knife, in Greenock at the beginning of last month.

And he was also charged with carrying out a serious assault on a man in a case that called at Paisley Sheriff Court a week later.

On March 6, Johnny appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court, under his real name of John Scott Winters, and was granted bail on three charges.

Prosecutors claimed that he was armed with a knife, was in possession of heroin and behaved in a threatening or abusive way in Oxford Road, Greenock, on March 4 this year, by shouting, swearing and threatening violence.

And, on March 13, he appeared in the dock at Paisley Sheriff Court charged with assault to severe injury – and was again released on bail.
