Fernando Llorente wants to build on his winner against Watford so Tottenham do not have to rush Harry Kane back too soon from his ankle injury.
The Spaniard has found it tough going at the club and has struggled in recent weeks as he has been asked to fill in for Kane while he is out injured.
But Mauricio Pochettino has stuck with Llorente and his first Premier League goal in more than 12 months came at the perfect time to rescue Spurs.
The club are expected to be without Kane until early March, although he has a history of returning sooner than expected. But Llorente hopes to give him more time to recover properly.
“I am very happy because that goal helped us a lot,” he said. “We needed this win after two defeats in the cups.
"It is probably the most important goal I have scored for Tottenham. It was my dream.
"Now I feel confident. I will try to do my best and if I continue to score like this, Harry can recover better.”
Llorente had earlier missed an easy chance and there was a mix of joy and relief when he ran to celebrate the winner with Pochettino. He thanked his manager for keeping faith in him.
“I went crazy,” he said of his celebration. “It is important when the manager has confidence in you. I needed that in this moment.
"The same player with confidence can be massively different. It is difficult when you do not play. But now I feel much better.”
Llorente was not the only hero for Spurs on Wednesday night. Son, returning from the Asian Cup, started their comeback and admitted it “hurt” when he was not able to help his team when they needed him most after Dele Alli joined Kane on the injury list.
Son said: “When you go away and the team go out of the cups, it hurts.”
Meanwhile, Spurs were on Wednesday morning working to offload forwards Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and Vincent Janssen, but they were not expecting any incomings before the 11pm deadline.
N’Koudou is set to return to Ligue 1 with Monaco, while Bundesliga club Schalke have come in for Janssen.
