Reids shoe store Belfast issues update on city centre store

One of Belfast 's oldest retailers has issued an update on its Belfast branch this week.

Reids shoestore, which has been on Sandy Row for 74 years, has been closed since mid-March when lockdown measures meant the closure of non essential shops.

However, unlike many shops it has not re-opened, leading to many worrying that it would be closed permanently.

The retailer has said that despite its Lisburn store being the only branch open right now, its Belfast branch will not be closed forever.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, Reids are currently only operating out of their Lisburn branch which allows for better and more effective social distancing.

In a statement they said: "At the minute we are trading out of our Lisburn store as we feel it has the better layout to maintain social distancing. Our Sandy Row store remains closed in the short term."

The news will be met by many with relief, as some Northern Irish stores have faced closure this year due to financial strains on the high street.

Book and stationery store Easons closed all seven of its Northern Ireland branches last month. The company blamed Covid-19 and Brexit for its decision.

Reids is one of Belfast's oldest shops, having first opened its doors in Belfast in 1946.
