Reid calf issue adds to Swans' injury woes

Sydney have suffered another injury blow with the Swans to take on Geelong without an established AFL key forward after Sam Reid joined Lance Franklin on the sidelines.

Coach John Longmire confirmed Reid would miss "a couple of weeks" with a sore calf muscle.

It's another big hit to Sydney's tall timber given Franklin (knee) is out for at least another two weeks and ruckman Tom Hickey (PCL) is sidelined for up to seven weeks.

George Hewett (concussion) will miss Saturday's game but the Swans were optimistic defender Tom McCartin (hamstring tightness) would return after missing the loss to Gold Coast.

Meanwhile, Longmire insisted they would be guided by Dane Rampe's surgeon on whether the gun defender could make an early return from surgery on a broken finger.

"Tommy was pretty close last week and so we're hoping if he gets through training this week he'll be right - (but we're) not quite sure yet with (Rampe)," Longmire said.

"We'll probably lose a couple. Obviously George Hewett will go out of the team and Sam Reid's got a sore calf which means a couple of weeks for him as well.

"So if we do pick up a couple (of inclusions), we might lose a couple.

"(Nick Blakey) obviously got the cork (leg). He's a bit better today than what he was yesterday. It's a day-by-day thing, we'll see how the week pans out."

Longmire emphasised Reid's absence wouldn't necessarily mean an immediate return for Logan McDonald after the No.4 draft pick was dropped to the VFL last week.

"He only played a half. We'll wait and see ... we've got to pick out what's best for the team and what's best for Logan," Longmire said.

"It's a combination of both.

"It was just an opportunity. We thought he could do with less load.

"That's why we did what we did with him and Braeden Campbell, starting (Campbell) as the sub as well.

"We thought five weeks into a starting senior campaign, we could probably lessen the load a little bit on those two.

"So the plan was to just play (McDonald) for the first half, which he did, and hopefully he feels well this week."

Sydney started the season 4-0 but have lost two games on the bounce and now face the task of dealing with Geelong, who thrashed West Coast.

"It's a great challenge for us. To be able to come off the game that we played and take on a team that's absolutely in form," Longmire said.
