I recently had the opportunity to join the launch of the Peterborough registered managers network and share some of the support and resources that Skills for Care has produced for registered managers.
It was fantastic to meet committed managers, listen to their issues and hopefully provide some assurance and pointers to where they can find support.
Skills for Care supports 138 networks led by registered managers across England and these networks have a reach of more than 3,000 managers. We hope that the network in Peterborough will link with these other networks to share learning and experience. Locality managers across England also offer support to these networks.
We know that how registered managers manage themselves shapes how they lead others, so Skills for Care looks to help registered managers build on their passion, determination and skills by:
- Supporting local networks of registered managers across England.
- Making a robust membership offer to registered managers who can join our National Skills Academy for adult social care.
- Making resources to support inspection and management available.
- Offering learning and development from preparing to take on the role, through induction and on to continued professional development.
Membership
Our membership offer to registered managers is built on a holistic understanding of the role and:
- Gives members access to practical resources, including advice and guidance.
- Includes initiatives like mentoring, designed to link managers and facilitate peer support.
- Presents an opportunity to contribute to maintaining and growing the identity and profile of the registered manager role.
As members, registered managers receive an exclusive monthly newsletter with a focused “cut out and keep” feature providing a practical source of information on a specific subject.
Recent features have included: a manager’s guide to leave and absence, a manager’s guide to the Mental Capacity Act and deprivation of liberty safeguards, and a guide to the manager induction standards.
I would encourage all registered managers to sign up to Skills for Care’s enews with our latest news, tools and events. Register your details to subscribe and get the bulletin emailed straight to your inbox every fortnight.
Management tools
I talked briefly to the network about the work we’ll be doing in the coming year and mentioned our resources on developing a positive workplace culture and the People Performance Management Toolkit.
We’ve also produced Care Improvement Works to support registered managers with preparation for inspection or work to improve your outcomes and rating.
We know recruitment and retention is a major issue for social care providers and I would encourage all registered managers to take a look at our finding and keeping workers site to support you with your recruitment and retention challenges.
To make it easier to find quality learning and development providers we endorse learning providers and display them in a searchable online directory.
There are lots more resources available on our dedicated registered managers’ webpages so I’d encourage you to take a look.
Networks
Meeting all those experienced and highly motivated registered managers in Peterborough, who stand at the heart of all services that offer high quality care and support, reminded me why Skills for Care is so focused on developing new networks and expanding existing ones.
To find a network in your area please see our registered managers network directory.
