Regis Philbin, the iconic TV host who died of a heart attack at age 88, was buried Wednesday in a private ceremony at the University of Notre Dame, the stomping grounds of his youth.
"The Philbin family wanted to bring Regis back to the place he loved so much for a private funeral and burial," Notre Dame spokesperson Dennis Brown said in an email to the New York Daily News.
Philbin, a Bronx native who studied sociology at Notre Dame, died on Saturday. He graduated from the historic northern Indiana university in 1953 and now rests at Cedar Grove Cemetery on the southern side of the school's leafy campus.
In a statement last week, the Rev. John Jenkins, Notre Dame's president, celebrated the "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" host and offered his prayers to Philbin's loved ones.
"Regis regaled millions on air through the years, oftentimes sharing a passionate love for his alma mater with viewers," Jenkins said the statement. "He will be remembered at Notre Dame for his unfailing support for the University and its mission."
