Regis Philbin dead: Legendary The Morning Show host dies at 88

Regis Philbin has died at the age of 88, his family has confirmed.

The legendary TV host passed away from natural causes just a month shy of his 89th birthday.

His family said in a statement to People: "We are deeply saddened to share that our beloved Regis Philbin passed away last night of natural causes, one month shy of his 89th birthday.

"His family and friends are forever grateful for the time we got to spend with him – for his warmth, his legendary sense of humor, and his singular ability to make every day into something worth talking about.

"We thank his fans and admirers for their incredible support over his 60-year career and ask for privacy as we mourn his loss."

Philbin suffered several health issues throughout his life.

He underwent an angioplasty in 1993 and then triple bypass surgery due to plaque in his arteries in March 2007.

In December 2009 he had his hip replaced.

Philbin was known for hosting Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee alongside Kathie Lee Gifford and then Live! with Regis and Kelly.

He also served as the original host of the US version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? from 1999 to 2002.

His TV credits also include America's Got Talent and Million Dollar Password.

Philbin started his TV career in 1961 when he landed a local talk show in San Diego called The Regis Philbin Show.

Then in 1983 he began to host The Morning Show, which was renamed three years later as Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee.

He won four Daytime Emmy Awards, including one for the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Philbin is survived by his daughters J.J. and Joanna Philbin.

He was married to his wife  Joy Philbin for 50 years.

He was also dad to daughter Amy Philbin, whom he shared with his first wife Catherine Faylen.
