Regional town of Wallaroo in partial lockdown as police search for man believed armed

Part of Wallaroo is in lockdown after police fired at a man they said pointed a gun at them.

South Australian police have fired a shot at a man they believe is armed with a gun, as officers put part of the regional town of Wallaroo on the state's Yorke Peninsula into lockdown.

Police said a patrol tried to pull over a Holden Commodore on the Spencer Highway earlier Monday.

A chase followed because the driver failed to stop, they said.

Police said the driver was last seen in East Terrace at Wallaroo before they abandoned the chase.

Officers said the car was found abandoned near East Terrace early Monday afternoon.

A patrol later spotted the man in Daly Street.

Police said he produced a handgun, and an officer fired a shot as the man ran off.

The wanted man is described as about 160 centimetres tall, with light brown hair and brown eyes.

Police said he was wearing black pants, a black windcheater with a white motif on the front, and a black cap.

Wallaroo residents in the area near East Terrace and Cornish Terrace have been urged to lock their properties and stay indoors until they get further advice from police.
