Regional aviation curtailed by coronavirus - flights lost but connectivity maintained

Regional aviation has been hit by coronavirus, with many flights now cancelled by Eastern Airways and KLM.

Eastern is now operating a “temporary revised schedule due to the significant fall in bookings because of the coronavirus impact”.

It comes after it swooped to pick up several routes Flybe, its fragile former franchise partner had serviced, before collapsing at the early onset of the pandemic.

Single re-booking options are being offered before June 30 for those who are no longer travelling, with the new heavily scaled back timetable in place from Monday through to April 17 at present.

Eastern said it was in part due to “a number of regional airports implementing day-time operations which inhibit accommodation of early/late flying programmes”.

Virtually all routes are now operating single flights in and out, with the exception of a twice-daily service between Cardiff and Anglesey, while there have been suspensions of Aberdeen - Newcastle, Aberdeen - Wick, Teesside - Cardiff and Teesside - Dublin.

The Aberdeen - Birmingham launch has been put back to April 27.

KLM is offering free booking amends and voucher refunds valid for a year through to September 30.

The connecting Humberside - Amsterdam route has been pared back significantly.

Via Schiphol it serves the globe, with many flights suspended and others only allowing citizens of that country to disembark, or placing a ban on those from countries with more than 200 confirmed coronavirus cases. Health checks are also in places for some locations prior to departure.

It is down to a single-daily Cityhopper service for the hour-flight across the North Sea.

A spokesman for Humberside Airport said: “Our focus is on ensuring that risk to our customers, our stakeholders, and to our own employees is minimised.

“We remain an operational environment, and will continue to provide support to passengers, airline customers and other stakeholders, while adhering to evolving guidance given by government, Public Health England and the NHS.

“Anyone visiting the airport should first have considered whether they may pose a risk to others, and should follow NHS and Public Health England guidance on social distancing and self-isolation.”

All flights out of Doncaster were today cancelled, with only a Majorca return touching down.

It is currently acting as an aviation park too, with a Virgin Airbus A380 and several Wizz jets ‘resting’ in South Yorkshire.

Leeds Bradford is maintaining a healthier schedule, with around a dozen services operational.
