NSW Police's Newcastle-based Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell will retire this year, after four decades on the force.

Assistant Commissioner Mitchell has been the commander of the state's Northern Region - which stretches from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Queensland border - since 2017.

He was previously in charge of the Newcastle Local Area Command, as it was then known, between August, 2008, and September, 2011.

Prior to his tenure as Northern Region boss, Assistant Commissioner Mitchell spent nine years as the commander of the then newly-formed Police Transport Command.

In early 2011, he was put in charge of Strike Force Monro, which was the NSW Police response unit for the devastating earthquake in Christchurch, on New Zealand's South Island.

Assistant Commissioner Mitchell was unavailable for comment on Tuesday, but a NSW Police spokesperson confirmed he would be leaving his post in late April.

He joined the police force in 1981.
