Region in for a wet and stormy day

Canberrans can expect storms throughout the day with flashes of lightning and thunder.

Helen Kirkup from the Bureau of Meteorology said large hail was not likely to hit Canberra, however there was a chance some small hail could hit the city.

She said the stormy conditions were caused by an interaction between a surface trough and an upper level trough.

"The surface trough moves east and when it does that the showers and storms will start to clear from the Canberra region will move eastward," Ms Kirkup said.

"They'll continue for a while but by tomorrow they will have moved well of to the east."

Today is forecast to reach a top of 26 degrees with up to 4mm of rainfall expected.

Ms Kirkup said Friday should be "reasonably clear" while Saturday has a slim chance of showers and thunderstorms.
