May 12--Grateful Dead fans will have a chance to listen to The National's 59-song tribute album to the beloved jam band a day early.
As part of the lead-up to the long-awaited May 20 release of "Day of the Dead," 19 venues around the country will hold listening parties where Deadheads can gather to hear an all-star roster, including Wilco, Flaming Lips, War on Drugs and Courtney Barnett, put their unique twist on songs from the band's expansive catalog.
In Chicago, all six hours of the charity album will be broadcast from the rooftop at Reggie's, 2105 S. State, on May 19 starting at 7 p.m. The event is free.
Copies of "Day of the Dead" will be available at the club for purchase. Proceeds from the sale of the 5-CD box set benefit the HIV/AIDS not-for-profit Red Hot Organization.
Members of The National, along with Bruce Hornsby, Jenny Lewis and Will "Bonnie 'Prince' Billy" Oldham will perform tracks from "Day of the Dead" live later this summer at the Eaux Claires Music Festival in Eau Claire, Wis. The festival takes place Aug. 12-13.
