Police confirmed his family had been made aware of the devastating news.
Now as the investigation gathers pace, police are urging people who may have seen "two suspicious" men leaving the area towards the mosque to contact them.
It's believed his attackers ran half a mile to Central London Mosque during busy prayer time, where they changed their clothes and began washing their hands and feet among worshippers.
Armed police sealed off the mosque at around 6.15pm before searching inside and the surrounding areas.
It's understood the suspects fled the area.
