Regeneration of Glasgow's Tradeston area to continue after £1.2m funding package agreed

Funding of £1.2million to deliver improvements to Tradeston Bridge and the public realm at Tradeston on the banks of the River Clyde has been agreed by Glasgow City Council.

The funding will come from the Glasgow City Region City Deal, with Barclays to match this with £1million funding of their own.

The work will complete the development of a 3.7 hectares site facing the waterfront at Tradeston - an area that has suffered over the years through de-industrialisation with the loss of much of its population and economic base.

Developer Drum Property Group is creating a major mixed-use development on seven blocks featuring ‘Grade A’ office space, flats, a mix of local amenities and landscaped public spaces - with Barclays being the principal occupant.

Barclays will host their flagship state-of-the-art global campus on 500,000 square feet of the office space in this development, which will be able to accommodate up to 5,000 people making the bank one of the city’s biggest commercial employers as it doubles its headcount in Glasgow.

The three elements of the project will improve place quality in the areas around the campus, and improve quality and safety on key routes to it. These three elements are as follows:

  • Tradeston Bridge – the first of these elements that will be delivered, the work will see the bridge’s fabric refurbished on this landmark connection - which will see increased footfall - between the city centre and Tradeston. The work will be completed ahead of the opening of the Barclays Glasgow Campus in late 2021.
  • Tradeston Quay - this work will see enhancements to the public realm on the south bank of the Clyde at Tradeston, complementing the changed landscape in the area.
  • Tradeston Links - this element of the project will deliver enhanced feature lighting at three nearby railway underpasses, to promote safe and legible routes for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelers between local neighbourhoods and transport nodes. The most appropriate route for the delivery of this work will be agreed between the council and Barclays - in consultation with Network Rail as key stakeholder - and included as part of the formal agreement.

The council will now progress discussions with Barclays on the formal agreement on the bridge and public realm works.

Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of the Glasgow City Region Cabinet, said: “The development of this site is already transforming Tradeston and that part of the Clydeside, and will deliver a tremendously significant and welcome boost to Glasgow’s economy.

"Working with Barclays, this investment in improvements to Tradeston Bridge and the local public realm will play a key part in the regeneration of the area, making it more attractive to the many people who will soon be working and living there.”
