Refuweegee taking over old Fopp store on Byres Road in Glasgow's west end

Refuweegee is to take over the space vacated by Fopp on Byres Road in the west end of Glasgow.

The Glasgow charity, which works to ensure that all refugees arriving in the city are welcomed to the city in true Glaswegian style, announced that they were moving in yesterday.

Refuweegee founder and director Selina Hales told Glasgow Live: "I think we are quite possibility one of the only organisations that can be accepted to follow such an iconic shop.

"So we are hoping people aren't to upset about the closure of Fopp because at least it's being used for something really community-focused.

"It's going to be a community hub space where people can come in to drop off donations and we will be working from the space as well".

Prior to that, Refuweegee was located further along Byres Road next to the old Western Infirmary. And Selina is excited by the prospect of reaching more people via the new location.

"Having a high street presence [on Byres Road] has done us so well. We always knew it would be temporary being at 100 Byres Road.

"We were a bit gutted but when we were told we might be able to relocate to Fopp we thought that would be perfect".

As with the previous space, Refuweegee's new home will be both an exhibition and gathering place, with Selina keen to pay homage to the legacy left by Fopp as previous owner.

She added: "We are going to keep the banner round the ceiling with the old photos and film imagery and keep the Fopp 'splat' on the outside as a nod to what it was and the history of that space".

Refuweegee is set to open towards the end of March, with the first exhibition scheduled to take place on Thursday, March 26.
