Significant trauma is being experienced by refugee children being held in Thailand's squalid immigration detention centres (IDCs), claims a new report from Save the Children, a non-governmental organisation that promotes children's rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries.
The 56-page report, "Forgotten Futures : The lives of refugee children in urban areas of Thailand and Indonesia", was published last month and accuses Thailand of violating children's rights, impairing their health and imperiling their development.
"Migrant children detained in Thailand are suffering needlessly in filthy, overcrowded cells without adequate nutrition, education or exercise space," said Ratirose Supaporn, Save the Children's Asia Senior Manager for Migration and Displacement at release event of the report.
