Reform councillor sorry over ‘utterly indefensible’ Jimmy Savile banner row

  • Reform UK councillor Lilian Rogers has apologised after being photographed with a campaign sign that endorsed serial rapist Jimmy Savile over the Labour Party.
  • Ms Rogers, a member of Wigan Council, claimed she did not comprehend the 'true, disgusting meaning' of the homemade sign while campaigning for the Makerfield by-election.
  • In her apology, she stated she would never have associated herself with the sign had she understood its implications, condemning its wording as 'utterly indefensible'.
  • The incident has drawn significant backlash, with Wigan Council receiving numerous complaints and Labour councillor Paul Blay expressing his disgust at the 'lowest of the low' act.
  • Wigan Council is investigating the complaints under its Code of Conduct, following the controversy which occurred during the Makerfield by-election where Reform UK suffered a significant loss.
