Referee with Yorkshire derby history appointed for Leeds United's match against Sheffield Wednesday

The match officials have been announced for Leeds United 's upcoming clash with Sheffield Wednesday - and he's got a history in Yorkshire derbies.

Experienced referee Oliver Langford will have to keep a cool head when Garry Monk returns to Elland Road hoping to spring a win over his former side in Saturday's feisty local derby.

He's dished out 75 bookings, three red cards (two straight reds, one for two bookings) and awarded six penalties from the 20 matches he's officiated so far this season.

One of those penalties was awarded to Leeds earlier in the season in the 1-1 draw against Derby County, Mateusz Klich fluffing his lines from the spot after Patrick Bamford was felled inside the penalty area.

That's the only Leeds league match that Langford has taken charge of this season, but he was in charge last season when Leeds visited Bramall Lane and beat Sheffield United 1-0.

Jack Clarke teeing up Pablo Hernandez, capitalising on an error from Dean Henderson, was enough to give Marcelo Bielsa's Whites all three points but the referee's performance drew ire from Leeds fans.

Langford was adjudged to have been too lenient when he failed to send off Blades striker David McGoldrick for a high and dangerous challenge over the ball.

"I'm amazed by the referee's performance," commented former Leeds and Sheffield United midfielder Michael Brown during that game.

"I've seen him on several occasions. I think he's one of the most disappointing officials I've seen."
