Referee with long Leeds United history will be in charge for Swansea City clash

A familiar face will be taking charge of Leeds United's crunch promotion clash in Swansea this weekend, with the EFL confirming Keith Stroud will be on refereeing duties in south Wales on Sunday.

The 50-year-old has overseen 30 Leeds United games during his refereeing career, which has inevitably seen the odd talking point emerge.

The Whites have won all five of their matches Stroud has refereed this season, with the last one being the 4-0 win in Hull shortly before the lockdown.

His most infamous moment, in the eyes of Leeds fans at least, was in last season’s 2-0 defeat at Brentford, a result that would prove pivotal in ending the club’s hopes of automatic promotion.

When the game was still goalless, he shrugged off Patrick Bamford’s appeals for a penalty after the striker appeared to be fouled in the penalty area.

He sent off Gaetano Berardi for scrapping with Rotherham United’s Leon Best back in 2015 and has also dismissed Leeds players Alan Sheehan, Jermaine Beckford and Kevin Nicholls in years gone by, with his first Leeds match taking place way back in March 2006, when the Whites were held to a goalless draw by Stoke City.

All-in-all, Leeds have won exactly half of the 30 matches officiated by Stroud, with six draw and nine defeats.

This season he oversaw the wins at Salford (3-0), away to Barnsley (2-0), at home to Middlesbrough (4-0), away to Birmingham (5-4) and at Hull (4-0).

Blues boss Pep Clotet was left particularly unhappy by the referee's performance following his team's defeat in the nine-goal thriller at St. Andrew's.

Overall this season, Stroud has taken charge of 29 games in all competitions, showing three straight red cards and awarding four penalties.
