Referee uses harmonica instead of whistle after football match mix-up

A last-minute refereeing switch saw an official have to use a harmonica instead of the traditional whistle.

Spencer Hume was able to capture the hilarity that ensued whenever there was a foul or stoppage in play during a game between Tiptree Engaine FC and Stanway Rovers Reserves on the evening of July 31.

The initially booked referee failed to show up to ref the game so a replacement was selected but everyone neglected to bring a whistle however, there was a toddler's harmonica was to hand.

The game was then refereed with a harmonica with a hilarious, tuneful blast with every use of it.

After every blow, a chorus of chuckles can be heard from the spectators and players with the effective instrument.

Spencer said: "My first reaction was just laughing my head off, I was struggling to film because I was laughing so much especially when he gave the decisions, and blew it, I couldn't stop laughing.

"It was probably one of the funniest experiences of my life watching him with the harmonica."

Chairman, David Pomphrett continued: "The different notes perplexed everyone however, I can honestly say because everyone was so taken aback by a harmonica instead of a whistle and also because both teams knew he wasn't a real ref there was no arguing really or dissent!"
