Referee Steven McLean returns to Kilmarnock action for first time since Steve Clarke slaughtering

Steven McLean will referee Kilmarnock for the first time since sending off three men at Rugby Park in a performance deemed "the worst I have ever seen" by then Killie Steve Clarke.

McLean was slaughtered for his performance in the 1-0 loss to Aberdeen at Rugby Park in April, with Clarke suggesting he struggles to referee games involving the Ayrshire side because his father, Stuart, played over 400 games for them.

After the match Clarke said: "I went over and congratulated him (McLean) and told him it was the worst performance I had ever seen in my career - and it is a long career.

"He lost control of the game in the first half. He actually lost control of a professional football match.

"When we lost 2-1 to Hearts earlier in the season I mentioned the referee that night and it was Steven as well.

"I feel a little bit sorry for him. People tell me historically that he has never been particularly kind to Kilmarnock.

"I think he feels the pressure of the fact that his father played so many games here. I really do."

Saturday will be the first time he has refereed Kilmarnock since that eventful afternoon.

Elswhere, Kevin Clancy will referee Hearts v Rangers - his first appointment since his blunder-filled display at Easter Road.

The whistler was at the centre of controversy after he denied Celtic two penalties, while Hibs also felt he should have shown a straight red card to Olivier Ntcham.

They were also angered by decisions made in the build-up to Celtic 's equaliser while they felt they could have had a penalty of their own when Moritz Bauer slipped in the box only for Clancy to give a free kick the other way.

Both managers were heavily critical of the whistler and Clancy wasn't appointed to a fixture in the games before the international break.

That changed on Tuesday though as the SFA announced the appointments for this weekend - with Clancy taking charge of the big game at Tynecastle.
