Referee Nigel Owens hits back at England fan who called him a 'w*****'

Referee Nigel Owens has hit back at a fan who abused him on Twitter in the aftermath of England's crushing defeat to France.

The 48-year-old took charge of the sides' opening Six Nations clash in Paris on Sunday, which saw France run out 24-17 winners.

Whilst only eight points separated the teams at the final whistle, the scoreline flattered England, who were 17 down at half-time.

Yet despite their poor showing, one fan felt Owens deserved his fair share of criticism, and aimed a lewd insult at the ref on social media.

"What a w***** Nigel Owens is," declared @tomtallis11, as reported by Wales Online.

Completely unfazed by the jibe though, Owens quipped back in response: "It's a shame your father wasn't one."

His reply gained immediate support from followers on Twitter, who congratulated Owens on his witty comeback.

Former France captain Thierry Dusautoir was among those to show their appreciation, posting laughing and applause emojis.

One fan wrote: "Hi mate, I think you won the internet today, well played."

Owens has admitted in his column that this Six Nations championships could well be his last.

"There is a chance, I have to admit, it could end up being the last Six Nations match I referee," Owens said.

"I guess I will know more by the end of the next seven to eight weeks when the tournament is over.

"The powers-that-be will begin the cycle for the next World Cup, bring through newer and younger referees for 2023 in France.

"If I'm not to be around for that, they may not consider me for future Six Nations, but we'll have to wait and see."

Meanwhile England boss Eddie Jones blamed his side's poor start for their loss to France.

"We were slow out of the blocks, sorry for ourselves and out of kilter," Jones told the BBC. "We weren't good enough in that first half and they were very good."
