Referee named for Rangers vs Celtic showdown as officials and VAR confirmed for Ibrox

Don Robertson has been confirmed as the referee to take charge of this weekend's derby fixture between Rangers and Celtic.

The whistler will take charge of the fixture for just a second time after being drafted in during last season's Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden.

Robertson will be assisted by Frank Connor and David Roome, and Steven McLean has been named as the fourth official for the contest.

The SFA have also confirmed that Alan Muir will be on VAR duties alongside his assistant Daniel McFarlane.

Meanwhile, a Spanish referee in charge when Rangers sealed progress in Europe three years ago will be the man in the middle as they bid to keep their Champions League dreams alive tomorrow.

José María Sánchez has been appointed to the clash with PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

The 39-year-old was the official when the Light Blues secured a 2-0 win away to Lech Poznan in December 2020, when goals from Cedric Itten and Ianis Hagi earned a seeded place in the last 32 of the Europa League.

After last week’s 2-2 draw at Ibrox, both clubs will feel a place in the Champions League group stage is within their grasp when the face each other in the second-leg in the PSV Stadion.

Sánchez, who was the fourth official for Scotland's games against Denmark and Austria in 2021, was also the referee for Celtic’s 1-1 draw with Rennes in the Europa League in 2019.

The economist awarded a penalty apiece and dished out seven yellow cards and sent-off Celtic substitute Vakoun Bayo in a controversial clash.
