Referee Mark Clattenburg finally admits which Premier League team he supports

Mark Clattenburg has finally revealed which Premier League team he supports.

The Euro 2016 final referee admitted he supports Newcastle United in a Q&A on Twitter.

Clattenburg was a top flight official for 13 years before moving to Saudi Arabia in 2017 to officiate there.

Everton and Liverpool fans will certainly never forget the Merseyside derby in October, 2007.

Everton are just an afterthought to the pundits - and Marco Silva's resurgence is proof

Magpies boss Rafa Benitez was in charge of the Reds' that day as Everton went 1-0 up thanks to a Sami Hyypia own goal on 37 minutes.

But the tide of the game turned as Clattenburg awarded Liverpool two second-half penalties and sent off Tony Hibbert and Phil Neville.

Hibbert was the first man to make an early walk to the dressing room after he brought down Steven Gerrard in the box.

Dirk Kuyt stepped up to put his side level at Goodison Park in an action-packed encounter.

In the 90th minute former defender Neville also saw red after he palmed away Lucas Leiva's goal-bound shot.

Dutchman Kuyt coolly slotted away to win the game for Liverpool.

But in the dying seconds of the match Everton had their own claim for a penalty as they searched for a late equaliser.

Jamie Carragher fouled Joleon Lescott in the Liverpool box - but claims for a spot-kick were waved away by Clattenburg.

Kuyt could also easily have seen red in the second half after a 'kung fu' style lunge on Neville.

Speaking after the game the former Toffees' boss David Moyes was furious at the decisions.

The Scotsman said: "Decisions happen, that's football. But in the last seconds there's the chance for it to be corrected and it would've been a result we deserved.

"We deserved that penalty and if the other penalties were more blatant than that, then I am in the wrong game.

"I seem to see football differently. If the ref doesn't see that you ask why."

Benitez thought Clattenburg made the correct decisions in what turned out to be one of the most heated derby's in recent history.

The Spaniard told: "People talk about a penalty they could have had. But last season we lost here 3-0, two of their goals were fouls and nobody complained then.

"I felt both penalty decisions were right. And I also agree with the yellow card for Kuyt and not a red."

The 44-year-old referee recently announced he will take up a role in China after two years in the Middle East.
