Referee forced to abandon match 'after being wrestled to ground by player' in Wexford

A referee was forced to abandon a match after allegedly being wrestled to the ground by a player.

Michael Comiskey had to call off the Wexford Football League Fourth Division game between Ballagh Utd and Gorey Celtic after being held and wrestled to the ground in the 70th minute.

Gorey Celtic were leading 5-0 during Sunday’s tie and the disgraceful scene left the official with no option but end the final league game of the season, which will now be the subject of a full investigation.

Ballagh Utd Chairman, Colm O’Neill, confirmed today that the game was abandoned following an assault on the match official.

Gorey Celtic Chairman, Craig O’Connor, said: “Really it has nothing to do with us, we’ll just sit back and await the outcome.”

Wexford Football League Secretary, Gertrude Rowlands, said they will await the referee’s report.

She said: “We will consider the referee’s report and then decide on a course of action. There’s nothing more we can say at the moment.”

It is understood that a complaint regarding the assault has been lodged with gardai, who were called to the scene following the incident.

The referee did not appear to sustain any injuries.
