Referee for Liverpool's Champions League final with Tottenham confirmed - and Reds have history

The referee for Liverpool's Champions League final clash with Tottenham has been named as Damir Skomina.

The Slovenian official will be the man in the middle when the Reds meet Spurs in the all-English final in Madrid on June 1 at Wanda Metropolitano.

Skomina's assistants will be compatriots Jure Praprotnik, Robert Vukan, while Antonio Mateu Lahoz will be the fourth official in the Spanish capital.

The 42-year-old has already officiated a Liverpool game this season in Europe's premier competition, taking charge of the Reds' 1-0 win over Napoli in December - the match secured their place in the last 16.

Prior to the fixture against Napoli, Skomina had previously refereed Liverpool four times, with an unfavourable record for the five-time European champions.

The first Reds game Skomina took charge of was back in December 2009 when Rafa Benitez's side welcomed Fiorentina to Anfield for a Champions League group game.

The Italians won 2-1 as Benitez's final campaign in the Champions League as Reds boss ended in miserable fashion.

The Slovenian also blew the whistle for the Reds' Europa League last-32 clash with Besiktas in Turkey where Brendan Rodgers' side lost on penalties in Istanbul.

Skomina officiated a 1-0 defeat to Villarreal in a Europa League semi-final in 2016 too, although the Reds managed to turn around the second leg at Anfield to go through to the Basle final with Sevilla.
