Referee Craig Thomson announces retirement as he calls time on 19-year career

Craig Thomson has announced his retirement after 19 years as one of Scottish football's leading referees. 

The 46-year-old is hanging up his whistle after a career in which he officiated three Scottish Cup Finals and four League Cup Finals.

Thomson refereed at at Euro 2012 and took charge of two group stage games at the international showpiece in Ukraine and Poland.

The grade one official was also the man in the middle of the Borussia Dortmund's dramatic Champions League quarter-final win over Malaga back in 2013.

Thomson's handling of that match was criticised but then SFA chief Stewart Regan launched a impassioned defence of the man in black in the wake of stinging criticism.

The ref admits he's now looking forward for the next generation of officials to step up to the challenge.

He told told BBC Scotland: "I've enjoyed 19 years as a category one referee.

"It's time to let younger refs come through and maybe see if I can reduce my golf handicap."
