Referee chief makes VAR statement that will anger Arsenal and Chelsea fans

Referee chief Mike Riley has revealed that the decision to overturn what could have been a winning goal for Arsenal against Crystal Palace was wrong.

The Gunners drew 2-2 with the Eagles, after losing a two goal lead, however, Arsenal thought they had snatched all three points with Sokratis Papastathopoulos late strike, only for a VAR review to disallow the goal due to a foul in the build-up.

But, that incident has been cited by Riley as one of four occasions this season where VAR has ruled incorrectly, with another one going against Chelsea

As reported by the Telegraph , the Sokratis disallowed goal is alongside a penalty awarded to Brighton vs Everton, a penalty for Manchester United vs Norwich and Watford's penalty vs Chelsea.

Luckily for the Blues, the penalty didn't have an affect on the outcome of the result, with Lampard's men coming away 2-1 winners.

VAR has been shrouded in controversy since its introduction to the league at the start of the season, but Rilet told football.london that it is a 'learning curve' and said that things will get better.

"The learning curve we are all going through now is what decisions to we expect VAR to make? What is a clear and obvious error in the Premier League?" He said.

Art de Roché reviews Unai Emery's pre-Southampton press conference

"The fascinating thing through 12 match rounds  is the debate in football.  I was in the hub and listening to the commentary team calling one incident as a penalty and at the same time on a certain website, the pundit was calling it nor clearly a penalty and good use of VAR.

"So all of us have got to go through this to come out with a better consistency. We need to keep minimum interference but the maximum consistency."

Arsenal and Chelsea fans will be hoping they're not on the end of anymore controversial decisions as the Premier League returns from the international break.
