Referee appointed for Leeds United's trip to Luton Town - and the omens aren't good

The match officials have been decided for Leeds United’s upcoming Championship trip to Luton Town on Saturday - and it doesn't bode well for Marcelo Bielsa and his men on previous form.

Referee John Brooks from Leicestershire will take charge of the Whites for the second time this season and fourth time in their history this weekend.

But superstitious Leeds fans could be forgiven for feeling apprehensive over what, on paper, should be a routine win (if such a thing exists in the Championship) over the relegation-threatened Hatters.

In their past three games under Brooks, they have failed to win a single encounter, stretching back almost two years.

The 29-year-old official was the man in the middle when Leeds saw their unbeaten run on the road this season brought to an end at Charlton in September.

He was also in charge in late 2018 when United saw a hot streak across the early winter brought to an abrupt end with a 2-0 loss against Hull - arguably one of the harbingers for what would be a less fiery second half of the season.

Before that, he had been in charge of Leeds just the once, when the Whites surrendered a one-goal lead to lose to Norwich in the penultimate match of the 2017-18 campaign.

Kalvin Phillips had netted an early effort to give Paul Heckingbottom the lead in his last-but-one game, only for the Canaries to muzzle his side in the second half.

Brooks has never handed a red card out to Leeds, though he has given out six bookings across his three matches.

He will be taking charge of Luton for the fifth time in his career, having refereed them in League Two, League One and the Championship though, officiating in their 3-2 defeat to Fulham only a few weeks ago.
