Referee announced for Tottenham vs Newcastle - and it's bad news for Mauricio Pochettino

The referee for Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League encounter with Newcastle United this weekend has been announced.

And it's bad news for Mauricio Pochettino as he bids to maintain his side's unbeaten start to the new season.

Spurs have a very impressive recent record against the Magpies, unbeaten in four consecutive games - including back-to-back 1-0 wins when playing at Wembley Stadium.

In fact, it's almost four years since United last tasted victory away from home in this fixture.

Hopes of Spurs keeping that record intact has been somewhat dented amid news of the referee appointment.

Mike Dean will take charge of the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and that will bring back some bad memories for the Lilywhites and Pochettino.

The 51-year-old oversaw five Spurs Premier League fixtures last season - vs Cardiff City, Wolves, Arsenal, Manchester United and Burnley - and Pochettino's side won just two of them.

Worryingly the three defeats - against Arsenal, Man United and Burnley - all came in succession, so Mr. Dean has not proven to be a lucky charm for the north London outfit.

Pochettino will hope it's not fourth time unlucky and to avoid a repeat of the scenes the last time Dean took charge of a Spurs game.

The Spurs boss confronted the official at the end of the 2-1 loss at Turf Moor back in February and that outburst landed him a two-game touchline ban.

Pochettino will need to be on his best behaviour at the weekend.

Overall, the official from Heswall has refereed 66 games across all competitions involving Spurs ever since his first in 2000 and that's yielded 29 victories and 18 losses.

Dan Robathan and Mark Scholes are the assistant referees, with Graham Scott on fourth official duty at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

VAR will also be in use with Anthony Taylor and Gary Beswick undertaking those duties.
