Referee announced for Chelsea vs Liverpool - and it will bring back bad memories for the Blues

The referee has been announced for Chelsea's Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

And it's not great news for Frank Lampard as he bids to win the third game of his reign as head coach.

Michael Oliver will take charge of the meeting at Stamford Bridge which will bring back bad memories for all connected to the Blues.

Cast minds back to the last Premier League meeting between the two sides - a 2-0 win for the Reds at Anfield thanks to second half goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

The official that afternoon was Oliver and Lampard as well as Chelsea fans will be hopeful that history doesn't repeat itself.

Hopes of Chelsea avenging that loss have been somewhat dented upon closer look at Liverpool’s record with Oliver in charge.

The Merseyside giants are unbeaten in their last 10 games with Oliver as referee - and that includes games against both Manchester clubs, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Furthermore, the Blues did had a mixed record when he was the man in the middle in last season.

The 34-year-old oversaw five Chelsea games across all competitions in the 2018/2019 campaign - four in the Premier League and the other in the Carabao Cup.

Two of the three were at the Bridge and the Blues didn't lose any (two wins and a draw).

Overall, the official from Ashington has refereed 34 games across all competitions involving the Blues ever since his first in 2012 and that's yielded 18 wins and seven defeats for Chelsea.

Stuart Burt and Simon Bennett are the assistant referees, with Kevin Friend on fourth official duty at Stamford Bridge.

VAR will also be in use with Andre Marriner and Stephen Child undertaking those duties.
