JAIPUR: The Supreme Court on Friday gave no relief to BEd degree holders aspiring to apply for REET level-1 examination.
On a petition challenging the high court order barring the BEd degree holders from selection to the REET level-1 recruitment, the apex court issued notice to the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE). The next hearing on the matter is February 22. So many aspiring BEd degree holders could not apply for the REET level-1 examination this year as the last date of application is February 9.
NCTE has by a notification in 2018 allowed the BEd degree holders eligible for REET level-1 recruitment. But they had to undergo a bridge course following their selection. The state government issued a notification for REET 2021, allowing BEd degree holder candidates to appear in the examination with the condition that the final decision would be subject to the decision of the high court.
But the basic school teaching course (BSTC) degree holders launched an agitation against the decision of NCTE and the notification was challenged in the high court. The court gave its order in favour of the BSTC candidates last year. This order has now been challenged in the supreme court.
A division bench of the High Court however ruled in favour of BSTC candidates, calling the notification of NCTE impractical. After the decision of the High Court, about 9 lakh candidates who took both the exams last year have been disqualified for REET level-1.
