Reese Witherspoon 'lacked a lot of support' after the birth of her first child

Reese Witherspoon has candidly opened up about the struggles she faced when she first became a mother.

The 45-year-old mum-of-three has confessed that it wasn't all plain sailing when she first welcomed baby Ava into the world.

Ava, now 21, was Reese's first child with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. The pair also share 17-year-old son Deacon, while the actress has son Tennessee James, eight, with her current hubby Jim Toth.

But speaking to Kristen Bell and Monica Padman on a recent episode of Dax Shepard‘s podcast Armchair Expert, Reese admits that she struggled to make everything work when Ava was born.

She said: "I did not have a lot of support with my first baby and I learned really early, like this is not going to work.

"I tried to muscle through for five months with Ava, just not sleeping and I became delirious.”

Baby Ava arrived just two months after Reese and Ryan tied the knot in 1999. While the pair went on to have another child, they eventually went their separate ways in 2006.

She has since married current husband Jim, saying "I do" in 2011.

The Big Little Lies actress openly admits that it wouldn't have been possible for her to work during her first few months as a new mum.

"I was lucky enough to have money saved and I didn’t have to work," she explained. "But it’s just not a one-person job. I would even say it’s not a two-person job."

The actress took to social media at the weekend to share how grateful she is for her two older children.

In a sweet Instagram post, she gushed: "Gosh, I'm lucky to be their mom," while also sharing a loving family picture.

The photo shows the doting mum sat between her two children while they all happily smile to the camera.

A Series of Unfortunate Events actor David Burtka was among those sharing the love in the comments section of the snapshot.

He wrote: "They are lucky to have you!!"

Celebrity chef Candace Nelson also wrote: "This fills my heart!"

And model Cindy Crawford complimented Reese, saying: "You look like their sister."
