Reece Oxford admits all eyes will be on Bundesliga as German football returns

There may be no set return date for the Premier League as yet, but one Englishman is gearing up to take to the pitch this weekend.

Germany's Bundesliga is the first major European league to get going again after football across the continent was brought to a halt owing to the coronavirus outbreak in mid-March.

All 20 teams in the German top-flight are due to play over the course of the weekend, but no fans will be allowed into any of the stadiums with games being played behind closed doors.

Every game will be screened live on BT Sport, with a mouthwatering clash between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke on offer on Saturday at 2.30pm.

At the same time, Augsburg will resume their campaign at home to Wolfsburg with former West Ham defender Reece Oxford hoping to line up for the hosts.

And though the Bavarians haven't played since a 2-0 loss at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on March 8, Englishman Oxford is confident Augsburg can hit the ground running.

"Wolfsburg are a good team, but I think we're ready and probably, I'd like to say, one of the fittest teams right now," said the 21-year-old told BT Sport.

"We're raring to go and it should be a good game. We should be able get something out of the game.

"We've done a few games in the stadium to get a feel for the atmosphere when you play behind closed doors. I don't think it's a bad thing because we know the fans are behind us at home watching us.

"We're the first league to start again, so everyone's going to be watching from different countries.

"We know how to deal with it, we won't take it as a training game because we need the points and we need to finish in a good position."

The return of football is sure to be welcome for Oxford, with life set to return to some level of normality for the young defender.

The 21-year-old notes it was difficult at first to be away from his loved ones at such a difficult time, but believes he has now adjusted as the Bundesliga prepares to return.

"I'm not going to say it's been good or easy, it hasn't because I can't fly home and no one can fly over the Germany," he added.

"I haven't seen my family or anyone from England in 2-3 months. I've been by myself in Germany, it's something I've had to deal with.

"At the beginning it was hard to focus and everything because no one was around me. Now, I've just my mind ticking with cleaning up, cooking and my mum's FaceTiming me.

"I think I've l learned to deal with it now, but it's hard not just for me, but for the other players who are from England who are abroad in Germany or wherever they are.

"It's going to be a hard time for them, but you just have to keep your mind ticking and keep in touch with your family or girlfriend."
