Popular Reece Allen was stabbed to death following a Facebook 'spat'.
The 24-year-old died in hospital hours after he was found outside a home on West Avenue, North Shields, in January 2016.
Welsh told police he had lashed out in self defence after his victim arrived at the house he was visiting.
But the jury at Newcastle Crown Court heard how he had lured Reece to his death by breaking his mum’s window.
The court heard how Welsh, recently released from prison, had been behaving erratically and repeatedly threatened to stab people in the hours before he knifed Reece.
It was said the pair, who were described as acquaintances, had become involved in a “spat” online and fell out.
Welsh then smashed a window at Reece’s mum’s home to lure him to his death, lying in wait and stabbing him repeatedly when he turned up.
Reece’s mum, Sylvia, was among those to find him slumped in the street afterwards, fatally injured, jurors were told.
