Redundant travel agent started own agency - and hired old colleagues who had also lost their jobs

A travel agent has opened his own business after being made redundant.

Darren Owen started up in travel at aged 16, working as a travel consultant for Thomas Cook.

He stayed with the company for 27 years – working his way through the ranks at the national chain.

But he was made redundant by the chain earlier this year.

This prompted him to make the decision to open his own agency, Snowdonia Travel, part of the Brilliant Travel division of the Barrhead Travel Group.

And his move is also helping former colleagues as he has provided jobs for other people who were made redundant.

The new store has been opened on Seaview Road in the seaside town - taking on an empty unit.

Mr Owen said: “I am delighted to bring Snowdonia Travel to my local community, Colwyn Bay.

“Working for myself is something I have always considered and being faced with redundancy gave me the push to make the leap!

“To be able to bring my colleagues on this journey with me has made this venture even more exciting.

“The team is made up of a team of four consultants with over 80 years of experience collectively.

“The team offers in-store, online and telephone service in both English and Welsh.”
