Redskins working to extend RG Brandon Scherff, avoiding franchise tag

It’s been assumed for quite a while now that the Washington Redskins would place the franchise tag on right guard Brandon Scherff, and it was reported as such earlier this week.

However, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is now saying that the Redskins and their veteran RG are working to get a long-term deal done to avoid placing the tag on him sometimes before a new CBA is signed. This would allow them to potentially use the franchise tag on someone else. Left guard Ereck Flowers, perhaps, or maybe left tackle Donald Penn.

If he were to be placed under the franchise tag, Scherff would be set to make over $15 million this season. However, if he were to be signed to an extension, he would likely make close to the same amount each year, but the team would lock down his contract before the salary cap potentially rises, making his deal more valuable down the road.
