Redskins will start ex-Broncos QB Case Keenum in Week 1

After a brilliant season with the Vikings in 2017, quarterback Case Keenum signed a two-year, $36 million contract with the Broncos. Keenum’s success with Minnesota did not translate to Denver as the Broncos went 6-10 last season.

Denver then traded Keenum and a seventh-round draft pick to the Redskins in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick this offseason. Keenum competed with first-round draft pick Dwayne Haskins for Washington’s starting job this summer.

After three weeks of preseason, the Redskins declared Keenum the winner of their quarterback competition. The former Bronco will start for Washington when they take on the Eagles in Week 1.

Keenum posted a 87.2 passer rating in preseason, much better than the 65.6 rating Haskins has totaled after three games.

Denver, meanwhile, plans to start Joe Flacco in 2019. The Broncos traded a fourth-round pick to the Ravens in exchange for Flacco earlier this year. Who will be Flacco’s backup is less certain.

Rookie Drew Lock could miss several weeks with a thumb injury and Kevin Hogan is no lock to make the 53-man roster. Denver’s backup for the 2019 season may not yet be on the team’s roster.
