Redskins top NFL in money spent on IR players

The Washington Redskins once again rank among the top NFL teams with cap space invested in players sitting on injured reserve.

This one shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise given the Alex Smith injury at the forefront of things. It only got another push in this direction when tight end Jordan Reed ended up going to injured reserve recently.

According to Spotrac, the Redskins sit first in this area with a balance of $27.7 million sitting on IR. That’s more than $7 million above the second team on the list (Houston) and more than $10 million above the third-place team (Chargers).

Also keep in mind the salary not helping the team in the form of Trent Williams, just to be comprehensive.

And while this isn’t a good reason for the miserable state of the season — Houston is doing just fine, after all — it is indeed hard to win games with this much cash sitting out.

It’s only November, so odds are the long NFL season only means this number could keep climbing from here.
