The Washington Redskins made a major move earlier this offseason by signing All-Pro safety Landon Collins away from the Giants, helping to bolster their secondary.
However, can you name the safety that will likely start alongside Collins? Give up? That’s the problem.
At the moment, Deshazor Everett will start at free safety, and will hopefully be able to lock things down for the time being. Still, if the Redskins want to continue to grow into a playoff team that can make a postseason run, the secondary is a place to focus on going forward.
Everett was undrafted as a cornerback in 2015 and he transitioned to the safety role, where he has started 11 games. The fact that you probably don’t know his name means that he isn’t the worst player in the league, but it doesn’t have many good connotations either.
There are still a couple of prominent free agents on the market, namely free agent Tre Boston, who has played on three teams in his 5-year NFL career.
Despite bouncing around the league, Boston has proved to be a solid defender, ranking well against both the pass and the run. At just 26 years old — but with plenty of travel experience — the 5-year pro could be a perfect and cheap fit alongside Collins.
